Going through some frustrating cold or flu at the moment, I thought it was a good time to make something easy and quick, a beginner’s project for those of you who are interested in learning how to sew!
I am going to explain the steps the best way possible, although if you have any questions or think that this tutorial is not understandable, please don’t hesitate to let me know!
Grab a newspaper to design your pattern.
Use a square or design a square using a ruler and design 5 of them in a row, then cut one apart.
Find a fabric that you like, fold it in half and place the pattern pieces on top.
Pin the pieces on the fabric.
Use a piece of white soap stone to mark your pattern on your fabric.
After you mark your fabric unpin the paper pieces and start cutting the fabric pieces (both layers of your fabric, so that you have 4 pieces) leaving 1 cm seam allowance.
Then, cut only once interfacing for your 2 fabric pieces. I didn’t add seam allowance here.
Cut the pieces, place one layer of fabric on top and press.
The interfacing is now stuck at your fabric.
Fold the long piece in half, pin and sew the small side.
Start pinning the bottom piece of your basket.
Sew. When you reach the corner, lift your presser foot with the needle down, rotate your work to sew the next side. Repeat until you have sewn the 4 sides.
Now, to make it steadier you can sew the corners of your work.
Sew the other pieces of your pattern the same way
Place the interfacing piece inside the lining piece, right sides together.
Sew only the top 3 sides. Through the open side, reverse your work.
Put the lining inside. Pin the top to topstitch across the edge.
There you have it! Ready! You can place pens, your medication, or anything you like! I used it to put some first aid stuff 🙂
Using the same technique I made my sewing machine cover!
